Austria ranks 13th in the Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) 2021

On 25 January 2021, the non-governmental organization Transparency International presented the Corruption Perceptions Index for the year 2021. Austria is in 13th position in the new corruption ranking.

Published annually since 1995, the Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) aggregates data from a number of different sources that capture the perceptions of business people and country experts on the extent of corruption in the public sector. In the CPI 2021, 180 countries have been assessed using a point scale. A score of 100 indicates a public administration with a high level of integrity, a score of 0 a very corrupt one.

Reaching the 13th place in the current rating, Austria has improved by two ranks despite a deduction of 2 points. Austria shares the current place with Canada, Estonia, Iceland and Ireland.

While Denmark, New Zealand and Finland (88 points) share first place, Austria's neighbours Switzerland and Germany are ranked 7th (84 points) and 10th (80 points).

On the legal basis of the Federal Act on the Establishment and Organization of the Federal Bureau of Anti-Corruption (BAK-G), the Federal Bureau of Anti-Corruption fulfils its mandate to prevent and combat corruption. For example, the nationwide Network of Integrity Officers was established across authorities and sectors to serve as a platform for training and professional exchange. Among the important tools for creating awareness of corrupt and unlawful behaviour are the anti-corruption training courses held by the BAK as part of the basic training of the Federal Ministry of the Interior or of advanced training programmes. In addition to corruption prevention workshops in the school sector, the BAK also provides various advisory services and lectures for organizational units of the public administration.
